A Brief History
The Yellowknife Choral Society grew into the polished choir we are now from a loose collection of singers who liked to sing the Messiah at Christmas and musicals in the spring. Along the way, we gave birth to Ptarmigan Ptheatrics, a group specializing in musical theatre, and focused on developing our choral skills. We have sung an eclectic range of music since our beginnings in the late 1970’s, welcoming everyone in the community to join.
Our mission is simple: to make beautiful choral music. Our programs have included the Messiah, Canadian contemporary composers, some fluffy, fun Christmas music, and lots of “long haired” classical music. We have performed with storytellers, children’s choirs, stand-up comedians, dancers, Dene drummers and even a dog. Our performances have been hosted in almost every building in town large enough to hold us all. Our choir has been as small as 15 dedicated voices, and as large as 75. Approximately 15 different directors have led the choir.
The choir is maturing now, with some fine trained voices to lead us, and experienced direction to inspire our music. We now have a small chamber choir in addition to our larger group to perform at community events and to raise our performance bar even higher.
We welcome you – come sing with us!
